Socrative Student Response System

Socrative is a website resource for teachers or really anyone who wishes to create online quizzes that can be used to engage your students or pollers and collect immediate answers and feedback.  It is available to anyone, for free, all you need is to sign up, and have an internet browser available to use it.  It can be set up by the instructor at a desktop computer, you input questions and answers, then give your students your given Classroom ID and have them take it.  It is a great free tool that allows you to quickly and easily set up a quiz or in class activity for any student with access to a smartphone, laptop, or any internet connected device with an internet browser.

I'll quickly walk you through how to set up a free account and run you through creating a test and how you can access the results afterward.  If afterward you feel you wish to experiment with Socrative's Student Response System, remember it's completely free, so feel free, to experiment with your own account and quizzes at your leisure.

Getting An Account:

Head to and click the Sign Up button in the top right corner of the webpage.

You'll be taken through the registration process.  Asking you to enter your email and password, which'll be your sign in information in the future, and they'll ask you to enter your name, what you teach, and where you teach. After completing it, you'll get a confirmation email and you can log in at the main page if need be.  You'll see a screen when you log in that contains your Room Number, where you can create quizzes, and access account information.

Setting Up A Quiz:

Click Manage Quizzes and you'll be sent to a Manage Quizzes page where you can Create, Edit, and Import, and get Reports for quizzes.

Clicking Create allows you to name a quiz and begin to input questions as depicted below.

Starting A Quiz:

After saving you quiz from the earlier step, you'll be taken back to the main page and here you can Start Quiz.

From the drop down menu shown above you can select the quiz you wish to give and then how you want to give it. In order for your students to access the quiz your students can join your Room, by giving them the room number and having their internet connected device pointed to in an internet browser.

Collecting Results:

After the quiz has been taken you can look at the results by having them emailed to you or downloaded to your computer and opened in a spreadsheet.  You may need Microsoft Excel or some other program to open them.

In the report you'll get the students names, the questions, and what their answer were and whether it was correct or not.

After using this software as both a student in a classroom setting and as a tester, I really enjoy it's ability to quickly give immediate results, cost, and ease of access. Allowing any internet connected device access to the test, you can easily quiz students and no other special hardware is required.

Go to Socrative to check it out for yourself.
